"The Future of the Arts" Report

In August 2001, a report entitled "The Future of the Arts at the University of Chicago" was completed by a study group comprised of faculty, students, staff, and representatives of the professional arts organizations on campus. The recommendations of the report were as follows:

  1. To strengthen the arts curriculum in response to student interest and faculty initiative.
  2. To create an Arts Planning Council.
  3. To reaffirm and support the roles of the University's professional arts organizations as contributors to the University's academic mission and as vital components of local, national, and international arts communities.
  4. To facilitate collaboration among arts programs on campus and fuller interactions between the arts at the University and in the city at large.
  5. To address the facilities needs posed by the arts at the University, in particular (i) deploying existing facilities more efficiently and creatively; (ii) renovating Mandel Hall to enhance its capacity as a performance venue; and (iii) enhancing other campus arts facilities.
  6. To construct a new Center for Creative and Performing Arts to enable expansion over time to meet longer-term needs.
  7. To refine planning for the Smart Museum and the Court Theatre to collectively fulfill the Campus Master Plan's vision of an Arts Quadrangle on their current site.
