The Selection Process

The Board of Trustees, in consultation with the President's Office, assembled a selection committee of trustees, deans, and representatives of the Provost's Office, Facilities, and Development & Alumni Relations. This committee considered the work of more than sixty internationally acclaimed architecture firms with demonstrated success in the areas of performing arts centers, academic arts buildings, or similar facilities. The committee narrowed the list to a group of twenty-six firms, which all received requests for qualifications.

From the group of firms responding to the University's invitation, the selection committee chose five finalists:

  • Hans Hollein and Atelier Hollein (Austria),
  • Daniel Libeskind and Studio Daniel Libeskind (New York),
  • Fumihiko Maki of Maki and Associates (Japan),
  • Thom Mayne and Morphosis (Santa Monica), and
  • Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects (New York).

These five finalists were invited to campus in September 2006 for an "Immersion Day" of panel discussions with students, faculty, and staff. Finally, the architects returned to campus in November 2006 to present design studies for the new center based on campus discussions and the project criteria supplied. After a period of deliberation, the selection committee submitted its recommendation to the President and the Board of Trustees, which on May 31, 2007 authorized the selection of Tod Williams and Billie Tsien as the architects who will design the Reva and David Logan Center for Creative and Performing Arts.
